British Values
British Values at Hethersett Primary School
At Hethersett Primary School, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British Values of Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs. These values are an integral part of our curriculum, our school culture and our everyday interactions, helping pupils to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.
We believe that British Values are not taught in isolation; they are lived and experienced throughout school life. Through our PSHE, RSE, assemblies, curriculum subjects, pupil leadership opportunities and wider enrichment activities, children develop the knowledge, understanding and character needed to contribute positively to their communities and wider society.
Democracy
We help children understand that everyone has a voice and that their views matter. Pupils are encouraged to share opinions, take part in discussions, vote on decisions, and contribute to the life of the school through leadership roles and pupil voice opportunities. Children learn the importance of listening respectfully to others, even when opinions differ.
The Rule of Law
Children learn the importance of rules, responsibilities and fairness. Through our school expectations, behaviour policy and restorative approaches, pupils develop an understanding of why laws and rules exist, how they protect individuals and communities, and the importance of taking responsibility for their actions.
Individual Liberty
We encourage pupils to make informed choices, express themselves confidently and take responsibility for their own actions. Children learn about their rights and freedoms, while recognising that these come with responsibilities towards others. We provide a safe and supportive environment where every child is encouraged to develop their independence, confidence and resilience.
Mutual Respect
Respect lies at the heart of our school community. We promote positive relationships and teach children to treat others with kindness, courtesy and consideration. Pupils learn that everyone deserves to be valued and respected, regardless of their background, beliefs or personal circumstances.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We celebrate diversity and help children develop an understanding of different faiths, cultures and ways of life. Through the curriculum and wider school experiences, pupils learn to appreciate differences, challenge stereotypes and recognise the many values that unite us. We promote an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome, respected and valued.
Promoting British Values Through Our Curriculum
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum provides planned opportunities for pupils to develop an understanding of British Values alongside their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Children learn about equality, diversity, healthy relationships, citizenship, personal responsibility, online safety and the importance of contributing positively to society. They are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs and values, respect the views of others and develop the skills needed to participate fully in school life and the wider world.
Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain
At Hethersett Primary School, we aim to develop children who are curious, compassionate and courageous; children who understand the importance of fairness, respect and inclusion, and who are ready to make a positive contribution to society. By promoting British Values throughout all aspects of school life, we help our pupils become thoughtful citizens who are equipped to thrive in modern Britain.
