Design & Technology at Hethersett VC Primary School
Our Design & Technology curriculum inspires children to be creative, practical, and innovative thinkers. We want pupils to understand the design process and develop the confidence to design, make, and evaluate products that solve real problems.
Through engaging projects, children learn to:
- Design with purpose, considering the needs of others
- Make with skill, using a range of tools, materials, and techniques
- Evaluate thoughtfully, reflecting on their own work and the work of others
-
Our curriculum follows a spiral approach, revisiting key areas with increasing complexity to build strong knowledge and skills over time. These areas include:
Cooking and Nutrition – understanding healthy eating and food preparation
Mechanisms and Mechanical Systems – exploring movement and engineering principles
Structures – designing and building strong, stable constructions
Textiles – creating functional and decorative fabric products
Electrical Systems (KS2) – introducing circuits and electronic components
Digital World (KS2) – combining technology and design for modern solutions
Lessons are practical, hands-on, and linked to real-life contexts. They encourage problem-solving, creativity, and resilience, while drawing on skills from maths, science, computing, and art.
By the end of primary school, pupils will be resourceful, enterprising, and confident designers, ready to apply their learning in everyday life and future careers.
